Friday, August 5: Tip Your Waitress

by Giver Girl on August 5, 2011

This gift was a bit of a departure from our usual routine…but it was another fun person-to-person gift that just seemed meant to be.

Giver Boy and I have been enjoying a bit of breathing room these past few days thanks to a last-minute decision to put the kids in camp this week and next.  We’d meant to spend some additional quality time together, but lo and behold this Friday arrived and we’d yet to embark on so much as a lunch date.

Well, today we lunched.

It was a beautiful lunch.  The weather cooperated and we were able to sit outside.  The drinks and guacamole were perfect.  We could barely finish our delicious entrees.  In between bites, we fielded work and business phone calls–one of which was for me, from a potential client, calling to say she had decided to move forward and award me a significant contract for the coming fiscal year (a contract that will diminish, if not erase, any potential money worries for quite some time!).  Suddenly we were celebrating!

Giver Boy had to rush back to work for a meeting, however, and we had to quickly grab the check and hurry away.  As we waited for our tab, we looked at each other and remembered simultaneously–today is Friday!  Our gift day.  (More and more I appreciate the value of our having chosen to give on Fridays…all that week-end celebration lends itself to donating with joyful and thankful hearts.)

My heart raced slightly as I added fifty-two dollars to the credit card receipt–I’ve never given such a large tip at a restaurant before, and Giver Boy insisted we run away without watching our waitress’s expression as she opened the leather folio.  I didn’t get to see her face, but I have to imagine she’s probably smiling right now…just like me.

We hope you’ll consider tipping generously the next time you encounter someone who holds a job designed to serve you.

If you’re giving alongside us this week, we’d love to hear from you in the comments section below.
